Short introduction about Honey
Before start talking about honey and its benefits towards reducing weight, lets first understand what Ayurveda is because honey is one of the most important ingredients of Ayurveda.
What is Ayurveda
Ayurveda is ancient (dates back to 5000 years old) traditional Hindu system of medicine (incorporated in Atharva Veda, the last of the four Vedas), which is based on harmonizing bodily systems using proper diet, herbs, and conscious breathing.
In other words Ayurveda is the science of life that explains the knowledge of various natural guidelines to be followed in order to make a healthy, disease free and happy living. Following Ayurveda scriptures makes our life blissful which is above happiness.
Before moving into how honey mobilizes accumulated fat and burns them and make you to reduce weight, it becomes essential to know about its medicinal qualities, its Ayurveda benefits and its natural composition.
Honey - A natural Ayurveda ingredient
Bee’s honey is one of the most valued and appreciated natural substances known to mankind since ancient times. History of honey dates back to 10-20 million years ago.
Honey is known as ‘madhu’ in the Ayurvedic scriptures, meaning ‘perfection of sweet’. It is a fascinating food and medicinal substance due to its intrinsic connection with the honey bee (scientific name for bee is apis mellifera).
There are many types of bee’s honey mentioned in Ayurveda but we will talk about honey in general and how it is useful in reducing weight.
Honey is a sweet fluid produced by honey bees from the nectar of flowers. Honey in its raw form is pure and doesn’t require any kind of additional flavors. It is one of the best sources of energy.
Honey when consumed with different natural products such as milk, fruit juices, or as substitute in food can really help in treating various diseases which we will see in following subsections.
Honey has been in use for the benefit of human beings since as long as 2500 years and that too all across the globe.
Though honey has been proved beneficial in various studies in Ayurveda, nowadays some of the food, medicines and cosmetic products include honey as one of the important ingredient.
How Bee prepares Honey
Honey gets its start as flower nectar, which is collected by bees. A bee’s body contains a honey sac and it collects nectar in her honey sac and brings it back to the hive for processing into honey then it transfers the nectar to a house bee and takes off for another load.
It is naturally broken down into simple sugars and stored in honeycombs. The unique design of the honeycomb, coupled with constant fanning by the bees’ wings, causes evaporation to take place, creating the thick, sweet liquid we know as honey.
The color and flavor of honey varies from hive to hive based on the type of flower nectar collected by the bees. For example, honey made from Orange Blossom nectar might be light in color, whereas honey from Avocado or Wildflowers might have a dark amber color.
Beekeepers harvest honey by collecting the honeycomb frames and scraping off the wax cap that bees make to seal off honey in each cell. Once the caps are removed, the frames are placed in an extractor - a centrifuge that spins the frames, forcing honey out of the comb. The honey is moved to the sides of the extractor and then collected in the container.
Color and Flavor of Honey
The color, flavor, and even aroma of a particular variety of honey may differ depending on the nectar source of flowers visited by the honey bee. The colors may range from nearly colorless to dark brown, the flavor may vary from mild to bold, and even the odor of the honey may be mildly suggestive of the flower.
Why is honey so special?
Honey is special due to its
1) Its Natural ingredients,
2) Its composition and its Ayurvedic effect,
3) Its medicinal healing properties and
4) Its properties according to modern science
Honey is one of the original super foods and it contains vitamins, minerals, enzymes (such as invertase), antioxidants, sugars and even some amino acids. It is far sweeter than other forms of natural sugars.
Health conscious people all over the world are increasingly replacing white sugar with honey.
Natural Composition of bee’s honey
Honey is a mixture of carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other compounds.
Sugar content in Honey - Fructose and Glucose
The Fructose in honey is a natural sugar which provides a healthy source of calories. Not only that, it can help to keep off any sugary sweet beverage cravings you may have. Soda pop is full of empty calories, and though everyone knows this they still reach for the bubbly refreshment.
Frutose is nothing but fruit sugar and it is like sugar present in other fruits.
Honey contains antioxidants -
Disease fighting enzymes that protect your body by trapping free radical molecules. Research also shows that eating antioxidant rich superfoods may lower the risk of developing diseases and even stall the aging process.
The main group of antioxidants in honey are the flavonoids (Plant compounds (phytonutrients) that have shown antioxidant effects that may help lower the risk of heart disease, some forms of cancer, and diabetes.), of which, pinocembrin is unique to honey and bee propolis. Naturally darker honey has greater antioxidant properties.
Honey contains a number of enzymes (Chemical substances our body produces to help boost chemical reactions in the body), including invertase, glucose oxidase, catalase, and acid phosphorylase.
It also contains eighteen amino acids, the most abundant of which is proline.
Honey contains trace amounts of the vitamins B2, B4, B5, B6, B11 and vitamin C. Minerals like calcium, iron, zinc, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, selenium, chromium and manganese are also found in honey.
Other aromatic acids found in honey are Acetic, butanoic, formic, citric, succinic, lactic, malic, pyroglutamic and gluconic acids.
Bee’s honey is free of cholesterol.
In a study carried out by researchers at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Honey stimulates enzymes to protect from cancer and heart disease.
What Research and modern science says about Honey
Experiments and studies on honey have shown that honey is antiseptic, antimicrobial, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antiallergent, antitoxic, sedative, laxative, antianemic, antioxidant, healing and cleansing (external and internal), moisturizing and blood-purifying.
It promotes rehydration, easily digestible, stimulates immunity, and is beneficial for all types of skins diseases.

Table sugar provides empty calories with no nutrients or other benefits. Another common artificial sugar is high fructose corn syrup, whose increased use is linked to obesity, diabetes, and other illnesses.
In contrast, the body easily absorbs the main components of pure honey, the simple sugars glucose and fructose. 100% pure honey also delivers trace amounts of enzymes, vitamins, minerals, organic acids, amino acids, hormones, bioflavonoids, antioxidants, aromatic substances and water.
"Vitamins include thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, and Vitamin C. Important minerals include calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, chromium, selenium, and zinc.
Given the average sweetener intake by humans is estimated to be in excess of 70 kg per year, the substitution of honey in some foods for traditional sweeteners could result in enhanced antioxidant system in healthy adults.
