Those people who have a body mass index (BMI) of more than 25 and less than
30 come under overweight category.

What is Obesity - Obesity refers to a circumstance where an individual has
accumulated so much body fat that it has become harmful to his or her health.
Those people who have a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 30 would be
classified as obese.

There are various reasons for a person to become overweight or obese or high BMI but
at broad level most people falls into two types of reasons.

1. Poor food habits
2. No Physical activity (A sedentary life with no or irregular physical activity)

Everyone knows some people who can eat cheese burger, chips, muffins, drink gallons
of soda, and whatever else they want and still not gain weight. And there are some
other set of people who seem to gain weight no matter what they eat and how little they
eat.

Obesity is next step of overweight so if you are overweight then there are high probabilities that you may enter into obese
category. Whenever you come into overweight zone then you should start looking to reduce weight before entering into obese

Why? What allows one person to remain thin without efforts and makes another
person to struggle to reduce weight.
This is based on two important factors - genes (body hormones) and food and physical
environment.
Calorie Imbalance
In general one of the prime reason for high BMI (overweight or Obesity) is a calorie imbalance.
Calorie imbalance is nothing but consuming more calories through food and drink and spending (or utilizing) lesser calories.

Generally most of us consume more calories than we spend and this is the primary reason for calorie imbalance and hence
weight gain and resulting in high body mass index (BMI)

In very simple terms, our weight depends on 3 factors
- The number of calories we consume
- How many of them get utilized and
- How many of those calories get stored

But each of these factors is depended on a combination of genes and environment (food and physical). Both can affect our
weight (such as how fast we burn calories) as well as our behavior (For example - the type of food we eat).

Calories that didnít get utilized will start accumulating in our body and over a period of time they get stored as fat resulting in
overweight or obese in other words (High BMI).

Signs of fat storage in women -
Breasts, waist, hips, and buttocks. This is reason why women start looking bulky and shapeless.

Signs of fat storage in men-
Chest, abdomen, and buttocks. Most of the men develop a belly, big arms, big highs etc.
What is Calorie?

A calorie is defined as a unit of energy supplied by food and drink. All sources of food like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins
contain calories.
Calories are needed to provide energy so the body functions properly. The number of calories in a food depends on the
amount of energy the food provides.

The number of calories a person needs depends on age, gender and activity level.
People who consume more calories than they burn off in normal daily activity or during exercise are more likely to be
overweight.

For example - A physically active male, aged 22 years, requires considerably more calories than a sedentary woman in her 70s.

Calorie presence in food
1 gram of Fat = 9 calories
1 gram of Alcohol = 7 calories
1 gram of Protein = 4 calories
1 gram of Carbohydrates = 4 calories

The term calorie is commonly used shorthand for "kilocalorie". On food packets you will find this written as kcal. Kilojoules
(kJ) are the metric measurement of calories, and you'll see both kJ and kcal on nutrition labels.
4.2kJ is equivalent to approximately 1kcal.
Healthy move - It takes approximately 3,500 calories below your calorie needs to lose a pound of body fat - to lose
1 to 2 pounds a week, the caloric intake must be reduced by 500-1000 calories per day.
Reasons for being Overweight or Obese (high BMI - Body Mass Index)
Primarily there are two reasons for a person to become Overweight or Obese (high BMI)

1.  No Physical activity (A sedentary life with no or irregular physical activity)
2.  Poor food habits
Other Reasons for high BMI :-
- Alcoholism
- Overeating or eating disorders
- Insufficient or poor-quality sleep
- Limited physical exercise and more calories intake
- Poor nutrition food
- Smoking cessation and other stimulant withdrawal
- Emotional factors like stress, depression,
- A diet high in simple sugars and fats such as those in soft drinks and
   junk food.
- Genetic predisposition
- Hormonal imbalances (e.g. hypothyroidism)

Causes of high BMI
Not doing any sort of physical activity is one of the major causes for weight gain and leading to high BMI (body mass index). A sedentary life is a type of lifestyle with no or irregular physical activity. 

Sedentary activities include computer use for much of the day, sitting for longer duration for professional or personal work, spending more time in activities like reading, writing, watching television, playing electronic gadgets etc.
In sedentary life style the major problem is food imbalance means whatever we eat doesn’t get digested (because of no physical activity) and hence accumulation of calories and over a period of time these calories will get converted into fat resulting in weight gain. The important aspect to notice in sedentary life style is food imbalance - even low calories and no physical activity leads to weight gain over a period of time.

Most people around the world aren't very physically active. One reason for this is that many people spend hours in front of TVs and computers doing work, schoolwork, and leisure activities. In fact, more than 2 hours a day of regular TV viewing time has been linked to overweight and obesity.
Other reasons for not being active include: relying on cars instead of walking, fewer physical demands at work or at home because of modern technology and conveniences, and lack of physical education classes in schools.

People who are inactive are more likely to gain weight because they don't burn the calories they take in the form food and drinks.

An inactive lifestyle also raises your risk for coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, colon cancer, and other health problems.

As per U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Many Americans aren't very physically active. One reason for this is that many people spend hours in front of TVs and computers doing work, schoolwork, and leisure activities.
Our daily work don’t provide much opportunities for physical activity
As we are progressing towards electronic world and high technology and leisure activities we are approaching towards sedentary life style and this is one the primary reasons for our high BMI or weight gain.

The widespread use of vacuum cleaners, automatic washing machines, dishwashers, leaf blowers (automatic gardening tool), and a host of other appliances takes away almost all our physical exercise. Some people living in various countries still perform these activities by self (without using any automatic device) during holidays and weekends and such activities help a lot in burning calories.
A 2007 study published in the journal “Obesity” by the Washington University School of Medicine proves that people who follow a strict diet and fitness plan during the weekdays indulge in overeating over the weekend.
Many people drive to work and spend much of the day sitting at a computer terminal or performing desk job.
Because we work long hours, we have trouble finding the time to go to the gym, play a sport, or exercise in other ways.

Basically all these practices start in our childhood days; children’s don’t play outdoor games much in school as well as at home due to video games and laptops.

Instead of walking to local shops, we drive to one-stop megastores, where we park close to the entrance, wheel our purchases in a shopping cart, and drive home.

Part of the problem may be that people are watching television (TV) instead of exercising or doing other physical activities.
We can keep exercise equipment in our TV room or do physical activities while watching TV.

But food advertisements also may play a significant role. The average hour-long TV show features about 11 food and beverage commercials, which encourage people to eat.

And studies show that eating food in front of the TV stimulates people to eat more calories, and particularly more calories from fat.

Second reason for high BMI (overweight or obesity) is an individual’s food habit. This is one of the much growing concerns throughout the world. We consume more food than required by our body.

Areas that need to be looked into more thoroughly are fats consumption, food quantity and sugars.

According to one study approximately 67% of sugar-sweetened beverages consumed are soda and soft drinks. These drinks have been demonstrated to be one of the leading causes of rapid growth of obesity in the US and in other countries.
Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) do not seem to provide adequate fullness. Fullness leads a person to stop eating after having sufficient food while lack of fullness prevents individuals from compensating for the calories ingested from SSBs during later meals, this dynamic leads to a higher total caloric intake overall.

According to one research people all over the world are eating more calories on average than they did before. The reason for high calorie intake is a combination of increased availability and bigger portions.
Eating while watching television eat more calories

Not to mention, most of us eat our dinner in front of watching television or most of us eat at least one food in a day watching television.

Research shows - Eating in front of the TV makes you fat: You consume 25% more LATER in the day without realizing

People who eat while distracted also consume 10 per cent more calories at the time. Distraction while eating makes it harder to recall the amount consumed, this means we're more likely to over-eat later in the day. Same principle is applicable when we eat while working. 
Consuming bit additional food (extra calories) over a period of time and lack of exercise results in High BMI (Body Mass Index). It starts with Overweight and reaches to Obesity.
People eat more than they realize when faced with large portion sizes. This usually means eating too many calories.

Practically everywhere we go
Shopping centers, sports stadiums, movie theaters - food is readily available. You can buy snacks or meals at roadside rest stops, 24-hour convenience stores, even gyms and health clubs. Due to easy availability, not surprisingly, we’re eating more high-calorie foods (especially salty snacks, soft drinks, and pizza), which are much more readily available than lower-calorie choices like salads and whole fruits.

Caloric balance and body weight are generally maintained by balancing calories consumed against calories used by normal bodily functions and exercise. Thus, by consuming as many calories as expended and vice-versa, a person’s weight will remain stable. High BMI results if the food intake exceeds and no or irregular physical activity is carried out.

An increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat; and Not being active due to the increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, everywhere use of transportation, lack of body movement due to use of electronic gadgets.
